Count the calendar, not the benchmarks. Between July 4 and July 19, four Chinese labs put near-frontier model weights into public conversation: Meituan's **LongCat-2.0** (roughly 1.6 trillion parameters, MIT-licensed), Moonshot's **Kimi K3** (roughly 2.8 trillion, released July 16), Alibaba's **Qwen 3.8-Max** (roughly 2.4 trillion, previewed July 19), and Zhipu's **GLM-5.2**, already in the market. In a single fortnight, that is four labs operating at or near the trillion-parameter class, three of them claiming open weights and the fourth promising them.

No US frontier lab matched that cadence. Not one. The density on the Chinese side is the first-order fact, and it is genuinely new.

But density is where the easy story ends and the useful one begins. "China shipped four open-weight frontier models in two weeks" is the sentence every feed ran. It is also, read strictly, wrong in at least two of the four cases — because "open" has quietly become a marketing gradient, and the labs know it. That is not a campaign; it is a market where shipping near-frontier weights has become table stakes rather than a moonshot.

Now look at the *openness* column, because it is not the monolith the coverage implied. One model is MIT — the most permissive license in wide use. One ships genuine open weights but not open-source. One is a preview with a promise. One is "open" under a license bespoke enough that you have to read it before you build. Four models, four different answers to the question that actually matters to anyone who wants to deploy them.

**LongCat-2.0 is the real thing.** Meituan released it under **MIT** — the cleanest openness posture in the group, permissive enough that a commercial team can build on it without a lawyer in the room. Nothing about the subsequent surge changes the grade: this one earns the green flag.

**Kimi K3 is open weights, but not open-source, and the distinction is load-bearing.** Moonshot put a roughly 2.8-trillion-parameter checkpoint on the table — [The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/moonshot-kimi-k3-largest-open-model) called it "the world's largest open AI model," which on raw parameter count is defensible. But you get the weights, not the training data or the full recipe, and the release is *dated* — a specific checkpoint at a specific moment, not a living open-source project. **Qwen 3.8-Max is the tell of the whole fortnight.** Alibaba *previewed* — did not ship — a roughly 2.4-trillion-parameter model on July 19, positioning it, in its own framing, as second only to Fable 5. [OpenClaw's account of the preview](https://openclawlaunch.com/blog/qwen-3-8-max-preview) is blunter about the timing: it landed three days after Kimi K3, staged to coincide with the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. That sequencing is not an accident. A preview timed to a flagship state conference, three days after a rival's genuine release, with weights promised but undelivered, is a *positioning* move dressed as an openness move. Until the checkpoint downloads, it belongs on the yellow rung — a promise, graded as a promise.

**GLM-5.2 is the quiet one, and the quiet ones need the most care.** Zhipu's coding-and-agent line has been shipping open weights, but under custom terms rather than a standard permissive license. It is genuinely usable — [builders rank it among the strongest coding models](https://x.com/wildmindai/status/2080778570394194365) — but "open under Zhipu's license" is not "open under Apache," and anyone building a business on it should read the acceptable-use and commercial clauses before assuming parity with LongCat. Yellow flag, not because the weights are hidden, but because the license is bespoke.

The point is not to police vocabulary for its own sake. It is that the difference between MIT and "coming soon" is the difference between something you can ship a product on tomorrow and something you can only put in a slide deck. The open side is now shipping faster than the closed side, in the model class that used to be a closed-weight monopoly.

The fortnight's real lesson is not that China is winning the open-weight race — the capability contest is still live, the "second only to Fable 5" claims are still unverified, and a preview is not a product. The lesson is that "open" has become valuable enough to be worth faking, and that the fakes travel just as fast as the real thing.

Two of these four models — LongCat under MIT, Kimi K3 as genuine open weights — are things you can build on today. One is a license you must read before you trust. One is a promise timed to a conference. They were all reported as the same event. They are not the same event, and the difference is measured in whether the checkpoint downloads. When the next "open frontier model" crosses your feed, do what the announcement is counting on you not to do: read the license before you read the benchmark.
